lyrics

Average Heathen
© 2004 Maynard Music

My friend Johnny quotes the good book every chance he gets
He spends his days old dragons slaying, he hasn’t finished yet
And those jezebels who tempt and tease they will not break his will
For He, John, is a man of God and they’re going to hell

Once a guitar player in a band, he was going at full throttle
Then came the day John finally hit the bottom of a bottle
The voice of God did to speak to him, hit like a ton of bricks
He headed north to save his soul, traded guitar for crucifix

Your average heathen once was he
Until one day those hands were laid
Upon his head, now saved is he
And to his God his debt he pays

Johnny goes to bible school the stories he is learning
How the wrath of God does manifest in floods and fires burning
He takes a beating every night his tainted soul to cleanse
For loving once another man, he must make amends

Chorus

Now Johnny has his own T.V. show he warns of Satan’s curse
All the prophecies are coming true he quotes chapter and verse
On homosexuality he blames all evilness
He say’s that this is why the towers came down
But me thinks he do protest too much.

As for me I am the man that Johnny said he loved
He left me standing in the fire for his God above
I know he prays that some day soon this queer will see the light
But until then ‘tween me and sin his demon’s he will fight

Cause your average heathen still am I
And so I’ll be until I die
Into this hate I will not buy
I still think hell is just a lie
